09/04/2007 People from Lander and beyond gathered this past weekend to celebrate the life of Pete Absolon (the third climbing death in Lander in as many years). In 2005 we lost Jim Ratz, in 2006 Todd Skinner and now in 2007 Pete Absolon. It is with deep sadness that we remember these great men; these climbing legends; these local heroes. It is hard not to think of all the “could haves,” but we find ourselves discovering comfort in all of the “already hads.” For every memory each of us has with each of these wonderful human beings, it reminds us to live life to the fullest, be proud of the things we believe in and enjoy every moment. You really never know when it could be your last.
While not all of us were fortunate enough to know Pete very well, we did have the honor of a glimpse into his adventurous and kind soul through the memories and stories shared by his close friends and family. During this time of sadness, you can support his legacy by donating to the Pete Absolon Memorial Fund. It has been established to provide funds for Avery, his daughter, to continue the tradition of adventure and exploration that she so often shared with her remarkable father.

Last year we had to say goodbye to one of the founders of Wild Iris Mountain Sports and father to Lander’s climbing community. Todd Skinner’s death last October weighed heavily on both local and global climbing communities. All we can think is ripped t-shirt collars and perpetually smiling face; a psych that never ends.
A Memorial Fund has been established for his wife and three young children. To donate please send contributions to:

Additionally the Todd Skinner Foundation has been created as a nonprofit organization supporting an expedition and cultural grant. The mission is to provide funding for audacious expeditions to the far corners of the globe, carried out in the finest style, with respect for local customs and cultures. Jim Ratz’ death was a tremendous blow in 2005. As one of the founders of Jackson Hole Mountain Guides, Jim’s passing shook the very foundations of the climbing community. We will always cherish Jim’s big smile, big heart and his many contributions to our community and crags.
The Jim Ratz Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established in memory of Jim’s dedication to teaching climbing. Every year the fund sends two local high school kids to climb the Grand Teton, guided by Jackson Hole Mountain Guides. Any Donations can be sent to:

We all struggle with how to make sense of these tragedies. For most of us the heart of Lander lies in our adventurous backyard. We all have Jim, Todd and Pete to thank for their efforts in making this a reality. If you climb in the Lander area there is a strong chance you will be touched by them. The legacy of these three great men lives on in their efforts, vision and belief in Lander. Cherish and honor your time here in Lander, in the Wind River Range and in the outdoors – it’s what these greats have lived for.
